Skills and Samples

Creativity

Creativity is one of my strongest and most favorite areas—hence the choice to be marketing major.  With a background in several arts and crafts, music, and photography, marketing was a perfect match.  Below is a list of summaries and samples.  To see a larger view, click on the thumbnails.

Problem Solving

All college classes require a bit of problem solving and analytical reasoning—especially the business and math classes.  Classes that have taught me the best problem solving tactics include: Business Law, Accounting, Calculus, Economics, Finance, and all Marketing classes.  Each classes presented problem solving in a unique way but offered in-depth thinking in all of them.

Organizational

I’m so organized that it drives others around me crazy—honestly. Throughout college, I kept a part time job, 5 classes a semester, extracurricular activities, dean’s list status and a social life; so it was important to stay organized.  I’m a perfectionist when it comes to organization and it is demonstrated in most, if not all, of my projects.

Leadership and Teamwork

As a marketing major, I was presented with several projects that require teamwork.  Though not always easy, group projects teach you several ways to handle several different scenarios (i.e. overlapping schedules, deadlines, personality differences, brainstorming conflicts, too many leaders in one group, etc…).  Each group project has taught me a different lesson, and I have learned along the way that it is important to know when to lead and when to let someone more apt to the job take the leadership role.  My most important projects in college were:

Communicative

Besides the several class projects, Peer Leading taught me the value of communication the best.  Not only did I need to communicate with the professor on a daily basis, but I had to serve as a bridge between the professor and the students. Also, my presentation skills improved dramatically after peer leading.  Once I realized that presentations were nothing more than a conversation with a big group of people, then I got comfortable in front of a group.  Now, I actually enjoy presentations.  Refer to the Awards and Recognitions page for some quotes from students that I worked with.

Technical

Microsoft Office: Very proficient in all levels of including Office 2007.  (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, and Publisher)

Outdoor Marketing- Created a flyer for a promotional strategy event titled “Pontiac-A-Palooza” and coined the slogan “Respect the Unexpected” for the overall event to promote Pontiac.  Flyer created using Windows Publisher.

Press Medium- In high school,  I was senior editor for the newspaper and yearbook staff.  I designed and wrote 80% of the senior pages, which in retrospect, is half the yearbook.  I also formatted  the layout for the newspapers.  Pictured here is an image of a series of pages I created using InDesign.

Logo and Slogan– Designed for a hypothetical “Scrappy Foods” grocery store on Kennesaw’s Campus.  “Got a Little Scrappy in You?” was nominated favorite by group.

Travel and Informational Brochure- Designed for Cool River Tubing Company in Helen, GA as part of an internship program. Created using Windows Publisher.

Experiential Video- Received a $500 scholarship to make a video for the business marketing study abroad trip to Trinidad and Tobago documenting our time spent while working abroad.  The video was created using Windows Movie Maker and was sent to all business leaders that we worked with while in the country. The Video (wmv format).

Business Concept- Created concept for ideal theatre located in Kennesaw named The Spotlight Theater.  Includes promotional strategies, all marketing efforts, locations, all 4 P’s, and an overall explanation of the idea.

Product, Price, Place, Promotion- My first marketing project where we had to come up with an service/product and write an entire marketing plan on the project.  Our group of 5 made the highest grade out of all 300 students in the class. We created “Scrappy Foods,” a hypothetical grocery store on campus with a distinct differential advantage to the competition.

Entertainment Marketing  Worked closely with local talent to promote upcoming shows and events.  Consistently updated myspace.com and facebook.com pages, created flyers, updated email addresses, and developed press kits.  All show flyers created using original photographs and Adobe Photoshop.

Commercial Competition- In my Advertising class we were given a real-life product named eyeGhost that was invented to protect iPods.  Each group was to come up with a storyboard and commercial for the product to target Generation Y (ages 14-29). The commercial was posted on YouTube to create competition between the groups to get more hits.  We brainstormed and filmed together and each were given jobs.  My job was to film and edit the video and also record the disclaimer heard at the end of the commercial. Click the picture for a link to the commercial on youtube.

Pontiac-A-Palooza Event Planning- In my Promotional Strategy class, the entire class worked together on one huge project.  We teamed with Carl Black of Kennesaw to promote Pontiac’s new line of vehicles.  Together we developed an event on campus titled Pontiac-A-Palooza.  Over 3,000 people showed for the event and participated in the games and festivities of Pontiac. The results of the event can be found on the Event Page on Facebook. Click the picture for a link to the page.

The greatest team effort was performed during my second and third years of Leaders in Kennesaw.  This event was so huge that I have created an entire page about it.  Read more on the LINK civic engagement project on the Leaders In Kennesaw page.
