Overview of Social Networking:
Facebook was established in 2004 by a Harvard University sophomore known as Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook is a social networking site that allows any person with a valid e-mail account to join. Currently, Facebook has over eighteen million registered users. The Facebook Company makes all of its revenue by selling ad spaces to other companies. Myspace has become a major way for people throughout the world to become interlinked with each other. The owners never intended for the website to become as big as it is today. It has changed the way that people interact with each other and communicate. Myspace was started back in the year of 2003 by a man named Tom Anderson and Chris Dewolfe. “Our vision was to create a portal where our users could mobilize and connect around shared interests -- whether those interests are music, television, dating, nightlife, politics, religion or anything else”. It has become just that but has also entered into new territories that have helped Myspace grow to the multi million dollar empire that it is today. Craigslist.org, was developed by Craig Newmark in 1994. With his ingenious idea of allowing users to view classified ads all over the country. Since the website was developed, it has grown into the fourth most visited website on the internet, by averaging five billion page views each month. In 1999, Craigslist.org was incorporated as a profit company and is able to make profit by charging for job postings in United States’ biggest cities. Youtube is a free video sharing website founded by three former employees of PayPal. The Youtube company has grown tremendously over the past few years. Youtube allows users to upload, view, and share original video clips. Youtube is known to be very user friendly allowing unregistered users the option to watch videos and registered users the option to upload an unlimited amount of videos. In October 2006, Google bought out the company at a record deal of $1.65 billion dollars. Youtube can be accessed by clicking on the Youtube icon (above).
