An Introduction to Podcasting

Podcasting, a combination of the term ‘iPod’ (portable MP3 player) and the word ‘broadcast’, is one of

the newest trends in online information sharing. A Podcast is an audio multimedia file that is recorded and distributed over the internet via syndication feeds and listened to on iPods, cellular phones and personal computers.

Combining the relative ease with which a podcast can be recorded, published, and accessed online with the potential to reach an unlimited number of listeners through a free medium, institutes of higher learning are beginning to realize the potential of podcasting as a viable medium for disseminating information.

This report will to explain the history of podcasting, its components, and its benefits in real world applications.

Problem:

Podcasting and the Hearing Impaired:

Podcasting will be a mainstay in institutes of higher learning around the country, but a portion of society is presently excluded.  Podcasting is becoming an easily accessible medium available to everyone, but consideration has not been extended to the hearing impaired.

This raises a dilemma.  How can information provided in an audio only format be useful to those who cannot hear?  How might the technology be adapted to facilitate usage the hearing impaired?

Possible Solution:

To allow usage of podcasting technology by the hearing impaired, a video transmittal in could be incorporated.  Incorporating a signer in the broadcast  allows the hearing impaired to visually receive information.  There software available to there hearing impaired that transcribes their sign language into audio
