Podcasting

Podcasting is a type of audio/video file that is available for download over the internet. These audio/video files bring the convenience of having your business seminar or meeting in a digital copy that allows you to watch or listen to it at your discretion. With this new advance in technology people will no longer be out of the loop in the business world. Imagine if you are sick and cannot go to work. All you would have to do is have someone email you the podcast and listen to it while you recover your health. This will greatly improve the way businesses distribute information.

It was introduced in late 2004, but didn't really take off until 2005. Apple took the initiative and included podcast software on all their future computers. Podcasting even spread to the white house where the President would use podcasts to air his weekly radio show. With it so widely available and the ease of its use podcasting spread very easily.

Podcasting has many benefits that can apply to all different fields. With the ability of obtaining the podcast at any time it allows for a huge freedom on how people can obtain the information/entertainment whenever they need. Also there is no set time on when you have to listen to the podcast. Another big advantage is that instead of constantly searching for the newest updates to your business seminar; podcasting automatically updates as long as you are subscribed to the related blog.

Podcasting still has plenty of growth left; many schools are now just beginning to adapt podcasting to their curriculum. Podcasting wont be a subsitute for coming to class, but it can help students with studying for their tests and quizzes. There are people who object to this type of teaching because of the lack of interaction between the student and teacher. Most people do not see this as a barrier, but see podcasting as a huge breakthrough in the education world.

Podcasting is not only impacting the education world, but the business world as well. Businesses have incorporated the use of podcasting for product introductions, explaining what their company does and business meets/seminars. These podcasts allow the user to access them at their convenience, which gives them great freedom.

With all the benefits podcasting poses, there are a few disadvantages associated with it. Having the ability to download and listen to the podcast at your own discretion makes the interaction between people non-existent. This can decrease social behavior and make it harder to interact with people in the future. Also another disadvantage podcasts have is that you cannot accurately predict the content on the podcast. The only way to accurately find out is to listen to it entirely.

While podcasting is still new and in a developing stage. It has gained a lot of momentum and will gain new ground quickly. With its emergence as a business and educational tool hopefully in the future it will greatly improve the way we deliver and accept our information, news and entertainment.
