Social Networking

Social networks such as Craig’s List, Myspace, and eBay all provide opportunities for communication among friends and strangers, between employers and potential employees, and among businesses. Online, businesses can post advertisements for jobs. Individuals can post information about themselves in hopes of finding job opportunities. Individuals can find old friends, communicate with new ones, and make new ones via the internet.

The World Wide Web provides an avenue for quick communication among people all over the world. It has revolutionized our way of conducting business, it has made possible things that we could only dream of in centuries past, and it has also made the world a much more dangerous place.

Several threats accompany the benefits of social networking provided by the internet, false identity and sexual predation being among them. It is not difficult for a man (or a woman for that matter) to assume a false identity online for the purpose of finding someone whom they may attempt to seduce or to sexually harass. There is no way   for a fourteen-year-old girl to know that the sixteen-year-old boy she met in a chat room and is now instant messaging is really a fifty-year-old stalker. There is no way for a person to know for sure that the seemingly genuine Coach purse that they are purchasing online is really a fake. Something must be done to help reduce the number of individuals who prowl cyberspace looking for unsuspecting, innocent people to harm and cheat. But what can be done?

While it is impossible to completely eradicate all dishonesty from the internet, several things can be done to help reduce the number of people harmed by it. For example, parents need to take responsibility for their children. They need to make their children aware of the dangers of posting personal information online and make sure that their children are careful about who they are talking to online. Certain places on the internet (chat rooms for example) should have an age requirement and for those who are under that age, a double password should be required in order to gain access (one for the parent and one for the child).

Another method of making social networking safer is to make it a legal requirement for networking providers to require some proof of the legitimacy of any business wishing to advertise on their site. Also, a monitoring system should be installed in each network which alerts paid site monitors of certain words or phrases which may be considered dangerous. The questionable material should then be inspected and either deemed not worthy of concern or dangerous and then dealt with according to the situation.
