In an area where US 29 seems to go out of its way to make sure
that Franklin Springs is en route, two state highways in the area help
to cut off and by-pass areas serviced by US 29. One of these is
SR 281. SR 281 serves as a cutoff from Danielsville to Royston in
Northeast Georgia. Fore more information, click here.

This marker actually appears to be very old. There are several in
the area, including this one, that appear to date all the way to the
1960's or 1970's and are just well-made enough not to be further
deteriorated. This is the only old-style shield I have of
GA 281. It is actually quite common for "Mile 0" to be combined
with the first route marker. In the past, the route markers used
to include the state route number in small digits. This is very
rare in Georgia today.

Northern Terminus: SR 17 in Royston
Looking north on SR 17 into Royston. The Circle K on the right
may be soon to disappear.
Note the cool logo on the Sun Car Wash on the left. You'll see it
again in the next photo; it looks very retro.
Besides the odd speed limit/route sign combination (rare in Georgia),
you notice the car wash looks exactly like something from the
1970's. It's a small town, so it probably was.
