Georgia State Route 227
Back to Georgia Highway Ends
Decommissioned Duplicate: SR 227 South Section

Short connector east of Soperton.  Until 1997, SR 227 had two separate sections, so there were actually two SR 227's.  Only the northern portion remains with photos below.  To read more about GA 227, click here.

Southern Terminus: GA 46 in Zaidee east of Soperton

The LGS in the background reads "Swainsboro 22, Kite 25".  These are both destinations reached by US 221 at the northern end.  Below is a closeup of the LGS.  Yes, I have doctored these pics a bit ;)

Northern Terminus: US 221/GA 56 east of Soperton

What an ending!  Note the rocks lined up behind the signs.

The LGS in the background reads "Oak Park 16, Metter 32".  Those destinations are actually for GA 46 as GA 227 is definitely not the best route to either place.

Georgia State Route 227 South Section (Decommissioned)

This portion, existing as a separate route that comes near to but not connecting the remaining SR 227, was decommissioned in 1997.  The link provided at the top of the page shows the location of this route.

South Section Historic Southern Terminus: US 280/SR 30 in Ailey

South Section Historic Northern Terminus: SR 15/29 in the Kibbee community southeast of Soperton

I have almost never seen this kind of treatment before in Georgia where the old highway not only retains the original route number, but that it is also prominently signed as such by GDOT.  The only other examples I can think of are County Road 213 and 229 in Newton County and a large yellow "Bold Springs Road" sign on Old GA 164 in Franklin County.  The application of signage here surrounded with reflectors is the oddest thing of all.

This LGS on southbound CR 227 is around where the first reassurance marker would be.  Unfortunately, it is all that is left to remember this road by other than the peculiar sign above.  The road is paved with surface treatment (tar and gravel) and is still in fairly good condition aside from grass growing in the cracks of the pavement.  Also, the signage is still in pretty good shape (it hasn't deteriorated yet).
