Georgia State Route 144
Back to Georgia Highway Ends
Banner Route: GA 144 Spur

Often closed by the Army, SR 144 is one for the military.  This route continues the length of Fort Stewart running north of Hinesville.  This lengthy route extends from Baxley to dead end at the Fancy Hall subdivision south of Richmond Hill along the former alignments of SR 63 and SR 67.

Eastern Terminus: Dead End in the Keller community 14 miles south of Richmond Hill

This is an instance where a state highway literally dead ends.  In the photo below, notice the backs of advance warning signage of the impending end ahead.  In the top photo, note that the road ends in a Stop sign and that the road ahead into the Fancy Hall subdivision is not paved.  The second photo is looking the opposite direction with the back of the end signage in the first photo on the left.  Note the oddity of a reassurance marker westbound from a dead end road.  If you do not know the road you came in on, you also don't know what state your in, either!  (It's still very official, however).

SR 144 Spur, originally SR 63 Spur and later SR 67 Spur, extends east from SR 144 in the Hardwicke community.  The Hardwicke community features many homes built along the Canoochee River near Ossabaw Sound who take advantage of the waterfront and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, accessable by boat there.  At the end of the route is a significant historical site, Fort McAllister, which is also a State Park.

There was no end signage present here.  In fact, SR 144 Spur markers were scarce other than at the beginning of the route.

Eastern Terminus: Fort McAllister State Historic Park

Unlike SR 144, there were no signs anywhere for the end of SR 144 Spur, so no photo is available due to conservation of film. However, submissions are always welcome.
