Disadvantages of Online Classes

Online classes have many advantages that make taking them very enticing. However, there are a few disadvantages to consider before signing up for such a big commitment. One of the most important disadvantages to think about is the financial aspect of online classes. Most of the universities that offer all courses online charge double what a regular university charges. Most working adults already have lots of bills and are in debt. These universities do offer financial aid, however, this only leads to even more debt. It would be very hard to concentrate on studying if you have bill collectors calling everyday. Deciding to earn a degree is a big choice and knowing the different disadvantages can help guarantee that the right choice is being made.

Another disadvantage of online classes is the lack of supervision. No one will be there to guide a student through the course. The only thing given is deadlines that must be met. All reading, completing assignments and learning is up to the student. A person’s personality can either have a positive affect or a negative affect on how well he or she will do in an online class. Procrastination can make online classes very difficult and prevent a person from doing well in the class. Most online classes prevent a student from submitting an assignment after the deadline time specified. Problems will occur if a student were to wait until the last minute to submit an assignment.

Lastly, being computer literate is extremely important in order to be successful in an online class. Many older adults that are now trying to go back and finish up school are having a difficult time learning how to use the computer. Like mentioned above, there is no one to guide and help with any system problems that may occur. Having all the right equipment may also cause problems when deciding to take online classes. There are system requirements that must be met before taking an online class. This could get expensive if new software and hardware has to be purchased.

Overall online classes are a good choice if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Online classes are not a good solution for everyone even though they tend to be convenient for most. It takes a certain type of student to be able to learn and do well in an online class. The decision to take an online class varies according to each individual’s personal circumstances.  Online classes are great as long as you are able to afford them and have the skills to successfully complete all assignments via the Internet.
