Summer 2005

Course Objective: To provide a challenging research experience for Mr. Albert. He will conduct research on the effectiveness of Kennesaw State University's Summer Semester On-Line Courses.

Work in the directed study will fall into three categories:

  1. Determine the scope of the research project. Four areas will be explored: best practices; success measures; student and faulty impressions; and comparison with face-to-face courses.
  2. Design the instrumentation to gather data and obtain University IRB approval to conduct the research.
  3. Gather information.
  4. Analyze and present the information both informally and formally.

Mr. Albert will work with both Gary Roberts and Gary Selden.

Initial steps to be done prior to the start of the Summer Semester:

  1. Conduct literature review, and
  2. Begin IRB process to include mandatory training.

First third of the semester: Plan work, begin research. Second third of the semester: Execute the research. Manage all details. Third third of semester: Write the reports and develop a presentation of the results of the study.

Mr. Albert will meet once a week with his faculty advisors and other times as necessity dictates.

Evaluation criteria will be developed in detail during the first three weeks of the study. Both student and faculty anticipate that the grade will either be an A, B, or F.
