The Anglin Group’s most current assignment centers around the issue of Internet Social Networking. In order to address the issues regarding this topic we must first clearly define what a social network is and the different websites that are available to users. We plan to do an in-depth analysis that will cover the following areas: purpose of the sites, the success and/or failure of certain sites, how they generate revenue, who uses what sites (different age groups, business versus social and/or dating), and finally, known issues (both good and bad) surrounding these sites. We plan to ultimately provide our client with the pros and cons of such sites, whether or not such sites benefit our society as a whole and the direction we believe these sites are headed in the future.

Social networking websites have vastly impacted the way in which the world communicates. They have collectively attempted to alleviate the inconvenience of trying to gather large groups of people by providing the world with immediate access to one another anywhere and anytime. From Friendster, the pioneer of social networking websites, to MySpace, with over one hundred million users, to LinkedIn, connecting and empowering the business community, these websites have had a profound effect upon our society. With all of the success they currently enjoy, these websites continue to struggle to find solutions to three major issues, the ever-growing concern for lack of server space to handle continued growth, the issue of ever lurking identity thieves and sexual predators, and ultimately how to retain the interest of a society famous for its short attention span. As social networking sites address these issues they must also look to the future and decide where they go from here. Possibly, capitalizing upon their success in the business community and integrating with instant messaging and Voice-over IP applications. With the current success of internet blogs (user generated web logs), integration between the two seems inevitable. In the future, look for major e-commerce sites to find a way to do customer acquisition using social networks. |
